Our students take their drive to be successful and channel that energy into the many opportunities available to them. Best of all? They do it all while being supported by top-tier faculty who care. Learn about undergraduate research Jessica Hoover receives an Outstanding Investigator award from the NIH R35 grants from the NIH provides long term support to an experienced investigator with an outstanding record of research productivity. Professor Hoover embarks on a long-term project to understand coupling reactions of heteroaryls. Learn more about the Hoover lab WVU prepares rural students for STEM majors through new summer camp The WVU Center for Excellence in STEM Education is one of the five lead organizations in the First2 STEM Success Network, an INCLUDES Alliance and statewide collaboration supported by the National Science Foundation. The alliance is working to improve the college enrollment and retention rates of first-generation undergraduate STEM students from rural areas. Read more about the program Peng Li receives a $1.7M grant from the NIH The research supported by the R01 award aims at improving the efficiency of mass spectrometers for scientific research. Read in E-news Two Chemistry Professors receive CAREER Awards from the National Science Foundation Professor Carsten Milsmann for Earth-Abundant Transition Metal Photosensitizers The goal of Professor Milsmann's research is to provide access to photoactive compounds based on readily-available, earth-abundant metals that can improve upon and/or replace currently available technology based on precious metals. This will further the development of more cost-efficient solar energy applications. Learn more about the project Professor Brian Popp for Reductive Carboxylation of Unsaturated Hydrocarbons The project is focusing on reactions of CO 2 to prepare important chemicals useful for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials. Professor Popp's research is using both experimental and computational methods to better understand how these reactions work and how to improve them. Read in E-news WVU chemist receives a 3-year NSF grant to study free radical chemistry in flames Fabien Goulay, an associate professor in the C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry, is investigating combustion reaction mechanisms, which take place in flames, engines, and turbines. The 3-year NSF grant also provides training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, including first-generation college students and students from the Appalachian region, who have been traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. Read in E-news CESTA Community Engagement in Science Through Art "The Brain Complex" a cross-discipline collaboration sculpture. The CESTA program is funded by Dr. Jessica Hoover’s National Science Foundation CAREER award. The program teaches WVU science, engineering, and art students to work and communicate effectively across fields. Learn more about CESTA Research News Sustainable and Affordable Chemistry The group of Dr. Popp showed that catalytic additives, specifically triphenylphosphine or electron‐rich styrene, leads to improved catalyst efficiency and broadening of substrate scope. Read the special issue Effect of surface partitioning on aerosol chemistry Aerosol flow tube experiments coupled to molecular dynamic simulations reveal that molecular partitioning between the surface and bulk of an aqueous nano droplet significantly affect its chemical reactivity. The results published in Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. by the group of Dr. Goulay may have significant impact on the understanding of atmospheric aerosol chemical aging. Read in PCCP Mechanism of Iron-Catalyzed hydro magnesiation In a cover article by Rogers and Popp, the (iPrPDI)FeCl2-catalyzed hydromagnesiation of styrene was monitored using the solution FTIR probe reaction setup shown in the cover art background. Read the article Professor Kung Wang receives a NSF Grant for the design of carbon nanobelts The research aims at the synthesis of carbon nanobelts as templates for growing carbon nanotubes with a uniform diameter and chirality Read in E-news Undergraduate Students Chemistry is the science of the materials we use, the medicine we take, the environment we live in and the food we eat.
